Who would rejoice about finding online classes for Captain's license? Only the person who needs a license.
Who Needs A Captain's License?
You need a Captain's license to carry paying passengers on your boat. So, if you want to conduct boat tours or take people fishing or SCUBA diving, you need a Captain's license. You might need a Captain's license to perform weddings and funerals at sea, too.
These days, you don't get to be Captain of the ship because you own the boat. You don't get to be Captain because you used to be a sailor, or because your friends acknowledge that you're the best seaman around. These things are regulated, and the US Coast Guard decides who gets to be a Captain. And they insist on things like training, and passing a test to prove that you can do the job safely.
How Can You Get A Captain's License?
To qualify for a OUPV 6-pack license (That's Coast Guard lingo for the Captain of a boat that carries up to six paying passengers in addition to the crew), you have to have sea experience, you have to take an OUPV course, and you have to pass a test.
That seems easy enough, doesn't it? Especially if you've been around the water for a while and know about boats and maritime law and things like that. Wait until you try to find a class that you can get to and that fits into your schedule.
The classes are available from a lot of different vendors. And most of them will help with the testing part, too. But the classes aren't available everywhere, and they're mostly given on the weekends. Now tell me, if you work all week and take Captain's classes on the weekend, when are you going to get out on your boat?
So, Hooray for distance learning, and hooray for online classes for Captain's license. You've got the boat and you've got a crew, and soon you'll have your OUPV 6-pack license. Then you can put on your Captain's hat and start charging people to take them out on your boat. Hooray!
