How Do You Make An Online Application For Federal Education Grants?

There are two places to make an online application for Federal Education Grants: Studentaid.ed.gov, and grants.gov. These two sites provide educational loans for different purposes, and the application process is different.

Studentaid.ed.gov

This is the place you start your search for education funding. This site gives you information about educational funding programs and directs you to the FAFSA site. FAFSA is your friend, and the most important part of your search for financial aid.

You can fill out your FAFSA online, or you can get a paper copy and fill it out and send it in. The web site gives you detailed instructions on how to do either one. In order to fill out your FAFSA, you will need your most recent Federal Income Tax record, your parents' most recent Federal Income Tax record (unless you are an independent student-and the FAFSA instructions will tell you if you are or not), and your financial information. You will also to figure out how much you think you will need for school and living expenses.

So. Gather up all of your information, make yourself a nice cup of tea, grab a box of Oreos and settle in to fill out the form. It is not hard, but it is detailed and tedious. Read all the instructions carefully and you won't have any trouble. You don't have to do it all in one sitting; you can save the form and come back to it later.

When you've completed all the sections of the form you send it off and wait. At some point you will receive a form back from the Department of Education. You make sure everything is correct, and follow the instructions if you need to make changes. And then you wait some more.

You will eventually receive information from the college you plan to attend that details your financial award. You see, when you filled out the FAFSA, you applied for a Pell Grant (which is based on need), Federal Student Loans, and financial aid through your school. It is now one-stop shopping. Occasionally a school will require more information from you, but they'll let you know if they do.

Grants.gov

Grants.gov is the application center for all Federal grants of any kind. Sometimes there are educational grants for study in a special area, such as a NIMH grant for studying animal behavior. You have to go through the list of grants, and apply for the one or ones you want to be considered. It is a tedious process, and you might need help from a grant-writer. Your State Senator or Congressperson may be able to help you get a Federal grant if you qualify for one. These grants are almost exclusively for graduate degrees or post-doctoral studies.

There are other places to find financial aid. There are books in the library that tell you what scholarships are available, and there are places on the internet to look. If you are persistent you could find a lot of financial aid-maybe you'll qualify for a $10,000 scholarship for left-handed redheads of Nordic descent whose last name begins with Q. There are scholarships like that.

Whether you get scholarships, grants or loans, your search for financial aid begins with an online application for federal education grants at studentaid.ed.gov, and filling out your FAFSA.
