Early College Admission and High School Finishing Courses On The Internet

Are you a high school student who is bored to death with high school? Are you smart, and you just want to get on with your life? Maybe you should consider taking some high school finishing courses on the internet, and starting college early. In fact, maybe you could do both at the same time.

Some school districts offer some kind of early admission program where high school juniors and seniors can take college courses at the same time that they take high school courses, and earn dual credit for the classes. I have to tell you, though, that college is a pretty weird place to be if you're 15 or 16, and especially if you're the only younger student around. That's why high school finishing courses on the internet make so much sense.

Here's how it works. You enroll in a high school finishing course that is oriented toward college preparation. Make sure that you get both high school and college credit for at least some of the classes, and that you will earn a high school diploma from the program. Then start taking classes. Say you take English 101. It is a college level English class, and you get both high school and college credit for it. By the time you're 17 or 18, you will have completed high school, and you'll enter college with up to two years worth of college credits.

Disadvantages and Problems

The advantages of taking high school finishing courses this way are (1) you are still going to school, (2) you're not getting weirded out by all the older people in your classes, (3) you're learning things that are interesting and intellectually challenging enough for you and (4) you get free college classes.

There are some disadvantages to high school finishing courses on the internet. The biggest one is that you need to be self-disciplined enough to do the work without anybody standing over you, asking if your schoolwork is done, or setting deadlines. You have to be an independent, self-directed learner. And you probably are.

You also have to be able to manage your time well. Yes, you can sleep in til noon, but then you have to study later. You have a lot of freedom and flexibility to your schedule, but you still have to have a schedule. You have to be mature enough to manage your time.

If you don't have the skills and maturity to keep up with your classwork in a high school finishing program, you can wind up in worse shape than when you started. You can wind up actually having to make up high school classes in order to graduate with your classmates. The choice is yours.
