Flight Crew Survival Training Online: A Frequent Refresher
If you have to fly somewhere, would it reassure you to know that the flight crew had just completed survival training? Wouldn't it be nice to assume that they take frequent refreshers? It's possible if they can take flight crew survival training online, at least for review and refresher training.
Let's be honest. When was the last time you actually listened to the flight attendant's lecture? You know, the one that starts with, "This aircraft is equipped with six exits..." Could you really use your seat cushion for a flotation device? In the event of a water landing, don't you hope that somebody knows how to make sure everybody survives?
Although it may look like the flight attendant's job is to make sure you get a soft drink and packet of pretzels before the plane lands, he is actually responsible for passenger safety. Sometimes that means that he knows how to use the defibrillator, or how to calm a panicky passenger. Sometimes it means she knows how to use those seat cushions as a flotation device.
Refresher Training And Distance Learning
It seems reasonable to expect that flight crews update their knowledge and refresh their knowledge of procedures periodically. Providing flight crew survival training online would make that doable for crews, who are constantly traveling. They could train for new procedures or take refresher courses between flights, perhaps in the airport lounges.
Flight crews have to know how to get everybody off of the airplane as quickly as possible. They have to know how to do it if the cabin is full of smoke, or if it is on fire, or if it is under water. Once everybody is off of the airplane, they have to know how to keep people as safe as possible. Since airplanes can fall out of the sky anywhere, they have to know how to survive in a water landing, a desert landing or even an arctic landing.
You want the flight crew to have easy access to survival training courses. If the plane you are on catches on fire and goes down in a storm over the Arctic Ocean, you want to feel reassured that the flight attendants can get you out of the plane when the cabin is underwater and filled with smoke and fire. You want to be comfortably sure that the crew can help the passengers survive in the arctic water and get you safely back home.
Hopefully, that's what they're trained for. And hopefully, they took a refresher course recently. So you can go back to reading your magazine while the flight attendant talks about how to use the oxygen mask if it drops down.
