Is Conventional Learning Better Than E-Learning?

The answer to that question is, "It depends." It depends on who you are and what your learning needs are. It depends on your learning style and the distance to the nearest school. Both conventional and e-learning have advantages and disadvantages. Which one is better depends on you.

Advantages Of Conventional Learning

The biggest advantage of conventional learning is that it is conventional. We have been taught and trained to learn through conventional learning.

Another advantage of conventional learning is that it allows you to include the social aspects of learning. Some people learn best in groups, and learning in groups prepares you to work in groups. Some people need face-to-face interaction with the instructor and other students to learn. Conventional learning works really well for social learners.

Disadvantages Of Conventional Learning

Some of the biggest disadvantages of conventional learning are that you have to go there to attend the classes when they are offered. Conventional classes usually cost more than e-learning classes do, too.

Advantages of E-Learning

E-leaning is usually less expensive, and you take classes at your convenience. You have more flexibility about when you study, and about when you start and finish courses. You learn at home or work, wherever you have computer access.

E-learning utilizes technology that you need to know how to use. The technological advantage of e-learning is so important that Michigan requires students to take at least one online class before graduating from high school.

Disadvantages of E-learning

To succeed at e-learning you have to be reasonably self-disciplined and self-motivated. Nobody is standing over you making sure you meet deadlines or do your work. If you can't manage your time and don't have the self-discipline to stay on task, e-learning won't work well for you.

You don't have the same level of interpersonal interaction in e-learning that you do in conventional learning. You probably use chat rooms, email and forums to exchange ideas, but you don't get the same intellectual stimulation from that as you do from classroom discussions.

Both conventional learning and e-learning have their place. Each has distinct advantages. Neither is better than the other, but one or the other may be a better fit for you.
